Graphite is a mineral that is considered to be the most stable carbon type there is. Because of this variation, it is used as the base when figuring out the heat of formation of various carbon compounds. It is among the allotropes of carbon, which also includes diamond, amorphous carbon, lonsdaeleite, buckytube, plus three more.

Natural graphite comes in three principal types:

1. Amorphous graphite - this form is the product of coal's thermal metamorphism. It is available in the form of powder. It is also known as meta-anthracite.

2. Flake graphite - this kind is also called crystalline flake graphite. It is often plane and has hexagonal, angular or irregular corners.

3. Vein graphite - this form is also named lump graphite. It looks like a big mass of fibrous crystalline aggregates and is generally found in fissure fractures and veins. It is believed to be produced hydrothermally.

Graphite has numerous properties that make it recognizable from many other minerals and alltropes of carbon. First, if you look at its atomic particles in a microscopic level, its atoms form a hexagonal lattice with a fixed space between the planes. Second, it is capable of conducting electricity because its carbon deposits are strongly electron delocalized. Third, it possesses thermal and acoustic abilities. Lastly, it has impressive dry lubricating and self-lubricating characteristics, making it preferred in many industries.

Graphite may be natural or manufactured. Natural graphite is generally widely used to make steel, rafractories, expanded graphite, foundry facings lubricants and graphite lubricants. Artificial graphite, on the other hand, is often used in electrodes, neutron moderator, powder and scrap, along with RCCs or reinforced carbon-carbon products, such as gold clubs, pool cue sticks, fishing rods, and cycle frames.

Around the world, there are various graphite mining pits and regions. In Sri Lanka, there is an underground location where lump or vein graphite can be mined. Machineries and products like bulldozers are used to dig through the ore and extract the graphite.

To be able to get graphite and manufacture it to produce various goods, different methods and techniques are being applied. Of course, tools and machines are also a must to make everything easier and quicker.
